KWAM

Feburary 2008

KWAM was recently purchased by a small radio group from a mega radio group.  It was a pile of junk.  And that is being very kind and gentle...

The transmitter site is on the bank of the Mighty Mississippi River just west of Memphis.  All station equipment is mounted 20+ft AGL to stay above what we assume is the 500 year flood level.

Among the many, many problems at this site were...

  • Dangerous cobbled together ladders up to tower platforms.

  • EXTREMELY dangerous wiring to ATUs and tower lights.

  • Array badly hacked and mis-adjusted but operating legally on an STA.

  • Fences mostly falling down.

  • ATU boxes rusted out.

  • Ground system damaged / vandalized

AGSC and alter-ego KK Broadcast Engineering began what was obviously going to be a long term project to get this mess cleaned up.  We immediately built and installed new steel ladders for all 3 towers.  We immediately reworked the fences to close gaps where boards had fallen off.  We immediately began work to correct the array parameters.  We immediately installed new ATU control wiring to 2 towers and repaired some of the tower light wiring to make it safer to work around.

The Mississippi flooded thru May and June '08.  7+ feet of water covered the entire site.  The only access was by boat.

As the project progresses, I will post pictures but must wait for now.
